Supreme Court Stays Bail of Former UP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in Unnao Rape Case.

New Delhi:

The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the bail granted to former Uttar Pradesh MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar in the Unnao rape case, putting on hold an earlier order passed by the Delhi High Court. The apex court’s intervention ensures that Sengar will remain in judicial custody until further orders.

Acting on a petition filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Supreme Court also issued a notice to Sengar, seeking his response to the challenge against the High Court’s bail order. The matter will be taken up for further hearing after Sengar submits his reply.

The CBI, which is prosecuting the case, argued before the Supreme Court that the grant of bail was unjustified considering the gravity of the offence and the seriousness of the charges against Sengar. The agency maintained that his release could undermine public confidence in the justice system, especially in a case that has had far-reaching social and legal implications.

Kuldeep Singh Sengar is currently serving a life sentence after being convicted in the high-profile Unnao rape case. The case had drawn nationwide attention due to the brutal nature of the crime and allegations that political power and influence were misused to intimidate the victim and obstruct justice.

The Supreme Court’s decision to stay the bail effectively suspends the Delhi High Court’s order and reinforces judicial scrutiny over cases involving serious crimes. Legal observers note that the apex court’s move underscores the principle that bail decisions in such sensitive matters must carefully balance individual liberty with the interests of justice and public safety.

The Unnao rape case remains one of the most prominent criminal cases in recent years, symbolizing public concern over crimes against women and accountability of those in positions of power.
