Rakesh Jamwal Slams Himachal Government Over Discontinuation of Himcare Scheme.
Shimla:
Senior BJP leader and MLA from Sundernagar in Mandi district Rakesh Jamwal has strongly criticized the Himachal Pradesh government over its decision to discontinue the Himcare health scheme, calling it a direct attack on the poor and vulnerable sections of society.
Addressing the media, Jamwal stated that Himcare was not merely a government initiative but a lifeline for nearly 8.5 lakh families across the state, providing free medical treatment up to Rs. 5 lakh. He alleged that shutting down the scheme has pushed poor and middle class families towards financial distress, forcing them to bear heavy medical expenses or fall into debt.
He questioned the government’s intent and timing, asking why alleged irregularities in the scheme were not identified earlier. “Was the government asleep for over three years, or is this an attempt to divert attention from its own failures?” he said. Jamwal further criticized the announcement made during the budget session, terming it a politically motivated move lacking policy clarity.
Raising concerns over financial transparency, Jamwal pointed out that while around Rs. 1100 crore had reportedly been spent on the scheme over six years, only Rs. 13–18 crore per year was collected through registration and premiums. He demanded a clear account of the funds and accused the government of evading responsibility by citing “irregularities.”
He also alleged that the government continued collecting money from people for registrations and renewals despite planning to discontinue the scheme, calling it unfair and misleading.
Highlighting the ground reality, Jamwal said many families are now struggling to afford treatment, with some forced to sell assets or forgo medical care altogether. He warned that if the scheme is not restored immediately, the BJP will launch a statewide protest against what he termed an anti-poor decision.
