Himachal Pradesh Set to Generate 72 MW of Solar Power by December 2025, CM Announces.
Shimla:
Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu today revealed that Himachal Pradesh will generate a total of 72 MW of solar power through seven ongoing projects, with completion slated for December 2025. This ambitious initiative is part of the state government’s larger plan to enhance renewable energy capacity and position Himachal Pradesh as a leader in green energy.
The Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL) has already commenced work on two solar power projects in Una district, including a 12 MW facility at Gondpur Bulla and an 11 MW facility at Lamlahri Uparli. In Solan district, three solar power projects are currently under development: a 13 MW project at Saned in Nalagarh, an 8 MW project at Bara Barot, and another 13 MW project at Dabhota Majra. The tendering process for an additional 9 MW solar project at Dabhota One is nearing completion, with construction expected to begin shortly.
A 6 MW solar project at Tihra Khas in Una district is also in the pipeline, with the tender expected to be awarded later this month. The state government has already initiated surveys for eight more projects that, when completed, will add a further 325 MW of capacity to the state’s solar grid. These projects are set to begin construction once their detailed project reports (DPRs) are finalized.
In his address, CM Sukhu emphasized the state government’s commitment to making Himachal Pradesh the first “Green Energy” state in India by 2026. He highlighted that renewable energy sources like solar power are crucial for environmental sustainability and reducing carbon emissions, which in turn will help mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.
As part of the renewable energy push, the Chief Minister also pointed to the success of recently launched projects. On April 15, 2024, a 32 MW solar power facility at Pekhubela in Una district was inaugurated. Since its inception, the project has generated 48 million units of electricity, bringing in revenue of Rs. 14 crore by the end of January 2025. Additionally, a 5 MW solar project at Bhanjal in Una began operations in November 2024, while a 10 MW project at Aghlaur is expected to be completed later this month.
In line with its green energy strategy, the Himachal Pradesh government is also focusing on green hydrogen energy. A one MW green hydrogen project is currently under construction in collaboration with Oil India Limited at Nalagarh in Solan district, following a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
With these projects, Himachal Pradesh is setting a strong example for sustainable energy practices, positioning itself as a model for clean energy transition in India.
