Robotic Surgery to Revolutionize Healthcare in Himachal Pradesh.

Chamiyana becomes first institute in state to introduce robotic surgery, realizing CM Sukhu’s vision for world-class medical care.

Shimla:

Himachal Pradesh is on the brink of a transformative leap in its healthcare landscape as the state embraces cutting-edge robotic surgery—fulfilling Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s vision of delivering world-class medical facilities to the people.

In a historic move, the Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialities at Chamiyana, near Shimla, is set to become the first medical institute in Himachal Pradesh where surgeries will be performed using advanced robotic technology. A state-of-the-art robotic surgical system—procured at a cost of Rs. 28 crore, modeled after the facilities at AIIMS Delhi—has already been delivered and is currently under installation. Surgeries using this high-tech system are expected to commence by July 2025.

A Milestone in Patient and Doctor Care

Principal of the Atal Institute, Dr. Brij Lal, emphasized the dual benefits of robotic surgery for both patients and healthcare providers. “Robotic-assisted procedures require only minimal incisions, leading to significantly reduced blood loss, lower risk of complications, and faster recovery for patients,” he stated. “This technology allows patients to return home sooner and resume normal activities more quickly.”

From the doctor’s perspective, robotic systems offer enhanced precision, control, and a magnified 3D view of complex surgical areas. Surgeons are also less likely to experience fatigue during prolonged procedures, which means they can perform more operations efficiently and with improved outcomes.

Expansion Across the State

Following the directives of CM Sukhu, robotic surgical systems will soon be deployed at Dr. Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda, with further installations planned at IGMC Shimla, Medical College Hamirpur, and other government medical institutions in a phased manner.

This move is expected to benefit thousands of patients across the state, significantly reducing the burden of traveling to metros like Delhi or Chandigarh for specialized and often costly surgeries.

CM Sukhu’s Vision: Affordable, Modern, and Accessible Healthcare

The introduction of robotic surgery aligns seamlessly with the Chief Minister’s broader mission of modernizing Himachal Pradesh’s health infrastructure. Under his leadership, the state has already initiated several progressive reforms aimed at improving public healthcare delivery, increasing access to advanced treatments, and retaining medical talent within the state.

The advent of robotic surgery represents not just a technological upgrade, but a symbolic shift towards a healthier, self-reliant Himachal, committed to excellence in healthcare.
