Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on his return from official visits to Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, chaired an urgent meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to discuss the evolving situation in Nepal, where recent violence has led to the tragic loss of several young lives.

The meeting, held in the national capital late Tuesday evening, focused on the ongoing unrest in Nepal and its potential implications for regional stability and India’s close bilateral ties with its Himalayan neighbour. Senior ministers and top security officials were in attendance.

In a series of posts on social media platform X, Prime Minister Modi conveyed his deep anguish over the developments in Nepal. Calling the situation “heart-rending,” he expressed grief over the loss of lives and urged all citizens of Nepal to uphold peace and unity in these trying times.

“The violence in Nepal is heart-rending. I am anguished that many young people have lost their lives. The stability, peace and prosperity of Nepal are of utmost importance to us. I humbly appeal to all my brothers and sisters in Nepal to support peace,” said the Prime Minister in his message.

He posted similar appeals in Hindi and Nepali, underlining the cultural and emotional bonds India shares with Nepal. The Prime Minister reiterated that Nepal’s stability and prosperity are not only in the interest of its people but are also deeply significant to India.

“नेपाल की स्थिरता, शांति और समृद्धि हमारे लिए अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है,” PM Modi stated in Hindi.

“नेपालको स्थिरता, शान्ति र समृद्धि अत्यन्त महत्वपूर्ण छ,” he added in Nepali.

The CCS meeting was held to assess the situation comprehensively, including security, diplomatic, and humanitarian aspects, and to decide on India’s future course of engagement and support.

India and Nepal share an open border and a unique civilizational relationship based on strong people-to-people ties. The Prime Minister’s statement reflects India’s long-standing policy of supporting a peaceful, democratic, and stable Nepal.

While no official decisions were announced immediately after the meeting, sources indicate that New Delhi is closely monitoring the developments and may offer assistance or facilitate dialogue, if necessary, in keeping with its policy of non-interference and neighbourly goodwill.
