New Delhi:

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has made a compelling case to the NITI Aayog for the implementation of a ‘Green Bonus’ aimed at compensating Himachal Pradesh for its extensive efforts in conserving forest cover and natural resources. Speaking during a special meeting in New Delhi with NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery, member V K Paul, and a panel of experts, Sukhu highlighted the unique challenges faced by hilly states and called for a tailored financial approach to meet their needs.

“Himachal Pradesh acts as the lungs of northern India, and as such, it is imperative that we receive appropriate recognition and compensation for our environmental stewardship,” Sukhu asserted. He urged the NITI Aayog to advocate on behalf of the state with funding agencies and the Finance Commission, emphasizing the necessity of understanding the distinct requirements of Himachal.

In addition to the Green Bonus, the Chief Minister pressed for a rightful share of royalties from hydroelectric projects being developed by Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs), which he argued are vital for the state’s financial health.

Sukhu also outlined his vision for a “Green Himachal,” which aims to enhance sustainability and environmental protection. He underscored the need for improved air and rail connectivity to bolster economic development while maintaining the state’s ecological integrity.

Addressing pressing issues, the Chief Minister highlighted the increasing frequency of natural calamities and a troubling rise in cancer cases within the state, urging a comprehensive study to uncover underlying causes and devise effective solutions.

In response, Vice Chairman Suman Bery assured that the NITI Aayog would consider the state’s proposals, with an expert panel set to analyze the detailed case presented by Himachal Pradesh.

The meeting was attended by Chief Principal Secretary Sunder Singh Thakur, Principal Advisor to the CM Ram Subhag Singh, and other senior state officials, all united in their commitment to advocating for the interests of Himachal Pradesh
