On International Cheetah Day, PM Modi Highlights India’s Progress Under Project Cheetah.
New Delhi:
On the occasion of International Cheetah Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his greetings to wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists across the globe, praising their efforts in safeguarding one of the world’s most iconic species. In a detailed message, the Prime Minister reflected on India’s achievements in cheetah conservation and reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to restoring ecological balance and biodiversity.
PM Modi noted that it has been three years since the government launched Project Cheetah, an ambitious initiative aimed at reintroducing and protecting the world’s fastest land animal in India. He described the project as a significant step toward reviving India’s lost ecological heritage, while simultaneously strengthening the country’s biodiversity. The Prime Minister emphasized that the success of this effort goes beyond conservation—it represents a broader vision of living harmoniously with nature, a value deeply rooted in India’s cultural and civilizational ethos.

Highlighting the tangible progress made under the project, PM Modi expressed pride in the fact that several cheetahs are now thriving on Indian soil, including those born in captivity and those born in the wild after relocation. Many of these cheetahs are currently flourishing in the Kuno National Park and the Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary, where authorities have established suitable habitats to ensure their survival and growth.
The Prime Minister also welcomed the rise of cheetah tourism in India, noting its growing popularity among both domestic and international wildlife lovers. He encouraged more visitors from around the world to explore these reserves and experience the sight of cheetahs roaming freely in their natural habitat, calling it a moment of pride for the nation.
PM Modi attributed the success of Project Cheetah to the collective efforts of various stakeholders, especially the “Cheetah Mitras”—local volunteers who play a crucial role in monitoring and protecting the animals. Their dedication, he said, reflects India’s longstanding tradition of respecting and coexisting with nature.
As India continues to advance in wildlife conservation, the Prime Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to protecting endangered species and nurturing ecosystems that allow them to thrive. He concluded by expressing optimism that the efforts put forth today will leave behind a stronger, more sustainable natural heritage for future generations.
The statement underscores India’s growing leadership in global conservation efforts and marks International Cheetah Day with renewed resolve to safeguard the majestic species for the years to come.
