Shimla:

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday inaugurated the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) District Mandi’s ‘Drug-Free Campus’ campaign from Shimla, marking a significant step towards strengthening the state’s fight against drug abuse, particularly the menace of chitta.

The campaign aims to sensitize students and youth about the harmful effects of drugs in school and college campuses and motivate them to channel their energy towards education, sports and other constructive activities. By focusing on awareness and participation, the initiative seeks to create a safe and healthy academic environment across institutions.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said that the ‘Drug-Free Campus’ campaign complements the state government’s vision of making Himachal Pradesh a drug-free state. He stated that such initiatives provide further momentum to the government’s ongoing drive against drug abuse, including the widespread threat posed by chitta. Appreciating the efforts of NSUI District Mandi, he emphasized that youth-centric awareness campaigns are crucial to prevent young people from falling into the trap of drugs and to guide them towards a positive and disciplined lifestyle.

NSUI District Mandi President Anit Jaswal said that the campaign was inspired by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s strong anti-chitta stance and commitment to eradicating drugs from the state. He informed that the campaign would be conducted from January 23 to February 15 and would include a series of activities such as awareness programmes, anti-drug pledge ceremonies, anti-chitta walkathons and sports tournaments.

He further explained that the programmes would initially be organized at the school level and subsequently extended to colleges, ensuring maximum outreach among students and youth.

MLAs Sanjay Awasthi and Rakesh Kalia were also present on the occasion and expressed their support for the initiative, highlighting the collective responsibility of society, educational institutions and youth organizations in combating drug abuse.

The ‘Drug-Free Campus’ campaign is expected to play a vital role in spreading awareness and reinforcing the message of a healthy, drug-free future for the youth of Himachal Pradesh.
