“Robotic Surgery Is All Hype, Ground Reality Neglected”: Rakesh Jamwal Slams Himachal Govt.

Shimla:

BJP chief spokesperson Rakesh Jamwal on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the state government over its healthcare policies, alleging that claims about introducing robotic surgery are mere publicity stunts without groundwork.

Speaking in the Vidhan Sabha, Jamwal said the government failed to provide clear details on where robotic surgeries are being implemented, how many machines have been procured, and whether doctors and staff have been trained. “The reply that ‘information is being collected’ proves the lack of preparation,” he remarked.

Citing the medical college at Nerchowk in Mandi, he claimed it has effectively become a referral center, with patients being sent to larger institutions even for treatable conditions. He added that repeated announcements regarding MRI facilities, cath labs, and advanced equipment remain unfulfilled even after three years.

Jamwal questioned the logic of promoting expensive technologies like robotic surgery when hospitals face shortages of doctors, functional radiology departments, and essential equipment. He also raised concerns about affordability, asking whether common citizens could access such costly treatments.

Targeting the Himcare Scheme, he said the government appears inconsistent—considering scaling it down while announcing high-cost healthcare initiatives.

He also expressed concern over staff transfers from IGMC Shimla, warning that it could weaken healthcare delivery further.

Jamwal asserted that strengthening basic infrastructure and staffing should be the government’s priority before making ambitious announcements.
