UN Chief Welcomes Hamas’ Willingness to Release Hostages, Engage with U.S. Peace Proposal.

New York:

In a significant diplomatic development, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed the announcement by Hamas expressing readiness to release hostages and engage with the recent peace proposal put forward by United States President Donald J. Trump.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, the Secretary-General described the move as an encouraging step and urged all involved parties to seize this opportunity to bring an end to the ongoing and tragic conflict in Gaza.

“This is a moment that must not be lost,” said the Secretary-General. He emphasized that the potential breakthrough offers hope for de-escalation and a path toward peace after months of devastating violence in the region.

Guterres also expressed deep appreciation to Qatar and Egypt for their ongoing and “invaluable mediation efforts,” which have played a crucial role in bringing the concerned parties closer to dialogue.

Reiterating his long-standing position, the UN Secretary-General renewed calls for:

  • An immediate and permanent ceasefire;
  • The unconditional and immediate release of all hostages;
  • Unfettered humanitarian access to address the dire needs of the civilian population in Gaza.

He reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting all efforts aimed at achieving these urgent objectives, stating that the organization stands ready to assist in preventing further suffering and facilitating the path toward peace and stability in the region.

This development comes amid growing international pressure to end the Gaza conflict, which has resulted in significant loss of life, destruction, and displacement. The U.S.-backed proposal is seen by many as a renewed diplomatic push to break the deadlock and create conditions for a lasting resolution.

While challenges remain, the Secretary-General’s statement signals cautious optimism that a new phase of negotiation and de-escalation could be within reach.
